Though Rockland is still the commercial center of the midcoast Maine region, in Rockland, business doesn't take the place of pleasure. Several recent lists of the "best towns to live in" have included Rockland. The town is located near Camden and Rockport, with Belfast to the north.
You won't have to travel farther than Main Street Rockland to enjoy arts and crafts, unique boutiques, art galleries, fine restaurants and coffee shops. Downtown Rockland has been designated a National Historic District, with buildings in Italianate, Greek Revival, and Colonial styles. On the country roads outside town, little shops offer home-made snacks and garden-fresh food. You'll find farmers as well as fishermen in the Rockland area.
Rockland has hosted the Maine Lobster Festival since 1947, so the town is rightfully known as the "Lobster Capital of the World." Over the years, Rockland's shipyards, fishing boats, lime kilns, and granite quarries have been part of the town's commercial legacy.
Rockland is serious about its art. Anchored by the first-class Farnsworth Art Museum is recognized as one of America's best regional art museums, featuring the works of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth. The museum's permanent collection includes Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Thomas Eakins, Eastman Johnson, Fitz Hugh Lane, Frank Benson, Childe Hassam, and Maurice Prendergast.
Rockland is the county seat of Knox County, Maine. It was settled in 1769, and was originally part of Thomaston. In 1848 it became a separate town named East Thomaston, and was chartered as a city in 1854.

Down on Penobscot Bay, Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse has been a local landmark for more than a century. You're likely to find more windjammers in Rockland than any other harbor in America. Many schooners offer day trips that wander through Penobscot Bay's many islands. But if you want to sail for a week, that can be arranged too. Rockland is a great place to find a seasonal or year-round home.
